چکیده

Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs) are common in high-voltage transmission line applications. These same applications require fast, yet secure protection. However, as the requirement for faster protective relays grows, so does the concern over the poor transient response of some CVTs for certain system conditions. Solid-state and microprocessor relays can respond to a CVT transient due to their high operating speed and iflCreased sensitivity .This paper discusses CVT models whose purpose is to identify which major CVT components contribute to the CVT transient. Some surprises include a recommendation for CVT burden and the type offerroresonant-suppression circuit that gives the least CVT transient. This paper also reviews how the System Impedance Ratio (SIR) affects the CVT transient response. The higher the SIR, the worse the CVT transient for a given CVT . Finally, this paper discusses improvements in relaying logic. The new method of detecting CVT transients is more precise than past detection methods and does not penalize distance protection speed for close-in faults.

There are fewer problems encountered with optical voltage transducers in comparison with their inductive and capacitive counterparts. Although capacitive and inductive transformers are used vastly for the purpose of measurement and protection in the networks, they cause problems such as core saturation and improper transient responses which decrease the accuracy of measurement and eficiency of ...

Digital Distance Relaying

Increasing interest is being shown in the use of microprocessor for protection, switching and data acquisition required in modern high voltage substations. One of the most difficult functions to fulfill is that of transmission line distance protection employing samples of the voltage and current waveform taken from high voltage transducer equipment at the usual relaying point. This paper examin...

Investigating Performance of Numerical Distance Relay with Higher Order Antialiasing Filter

This paper investigates the impact on operating time delay and relay maloperation when 1,2 and 3 order analog antialiasing filters are used in numerical distance protection. RC filter with cut-off frequency 90 Hz is used. Simulations are carried out for different SIR (Source to line Impedance Ratio), load, fault type and fault conditions using SIMULINK, where the voltage and current signals are...

Improving Current and Voltage Transformers Accuracy Using Artificial Neural Network

Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs) and Current Transformers (CTs) are commonly used in high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) systems to provide signals for protecting and measuring devices. Transient response of CTs and CVTs could lead to relay mal-operation. To avoid these phenomena, this paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) method to correct CTs and CVTs secondary wa...

A positive-sequence current based directional relaying approach for CCVT subsidence transient condition

In this work, a directional relaying algorithm is proposed for transmission line to prevent relay maloperation during coupling capacitor voltage transformer (CCVT) subsidence transient. The effect of CCVT subsidence transient during single-pole-tripping condition is highlighted in this paper. The proposed method which is based on phase angle difference of post fault and prefault positive sequen...
